Development Cooperation in Sudan

Development cooperation between Finland and Sudan focuses on support to ecologically sustainable development, with climate change as an important theme. In addition, Local Cooperation Fund (LCF), administered by the Embassy of Finland in Cairo supports development of civil society and democracy through projects implemented by local NGOs. Priorities in LCF in Sudan are women’s rights and gender equality as well as human rights, democracy, and good governance.

The most significant bilateral project Finland is funding is the integrated Nile basin watershed management project. It promotes sustainable economical development through use of renewable natural resources. This is done mostly by developing sustainable land and water management in local communities. Finland’s funding is altogether 9,25 million Euros in the years 2010-2013, out of which bilateral technical assistance is 2,35 million Euros and support through the World Bank’s trust fund 6,9 million Euros. The project is implemented as a part of the World Bank’s East Nile basin watershed management programme. Finland supports Community Watershed Management component in the programme. Target areas include Atbaran, Baun and Dinder national park.

Through Institutional Cooperation Instrument, Finland also funds cooperation between the Finnish Meteorological Institute and Sudan Meteorological Authority. The project’s focus is in supporting capacity building of the Sudan Meteorological Authority, as well as in the effective use of weather observation equipment procured by Sudan. The project is implemented in 2011–2013 with a budget of 500 000 Euros.
